A lot of what we do these days is behind a screen. I mean, you can order food on your phone, chat with a friend without saying a word, take a tour of an apartment without leaving your couch, go on a date, attend college classes, and so much more. When is it time to unplug?
For me, I need a good 6-8 hours a week (waking hours) of not looking at my phone or computer. This can be hard when I literally do everything online.
- As a teacher, most of my assignments are stored in my Google Drive. I also use different apps as resources for my students. And let’s not even talk about how many emails I receive daily on my school email.
- As a mom, I keep up with my kids’ busy schedules by keeping everything on my Google Calendar.
- As a small business owner, I depend heavily on apps and extensions. I automate a good portion of our business to save time. I also do a lot of social media marketing on Canva.
- As a dog walker, I literally cannot do my job without having my phone. My clients expect to receive photos and updates on their pets with each visit. The Rover app also sends me a steady stream of business.

When my eyes start to feel like they are full of sand and my brain feels foggy, I know it’s time to take a break. I literally have to force myself to shut it all down. Even though my brain doesn’t want to shut done, my eyes tell me it’s time.
When do you decide it’s time to unplug? Or do you even unplug? Is this a foreign concept? Weigh in in the comments.
