Create a Joy List – and Do One Today

When was the last time you did something just because it made you happy?

Not because it was productive.
Not because someone needed you to.
Not because it was part of your routine.

Just for joy.

Today, we’re giving ourselves permission to reconnect with the things that make us feel good — no agenda, no pressure, no guilt. It’s time to create a Joy List and intentionally choose something from it to do today.

What Is a Joy List?

A Joy List is exactly what it sounds like — a personal inventory of the small, beautiful things that light you up. It’s your soul’s highlight reel. It’s not about big achievements or extravagant experiences. It’s about simple pleasures and nostalgic comforts that bring you back to yourself.

Here are a few from my own list:

  • Rewatching Dirty Dancing and pretending I’m in that final dance scene with Patrick Swayze (yes, even the lift).
  • Thumbing through my old Babysitters Club books to check in on Claudia and Dawn’s latest adventures.
  • Dancing in the kitchen to 90s music while cooking dinner.
  • Sitting in the sun with a good book and a cozy blanket.
  • Journaling with zero structure and all the feels.

What makes you feel that little spark inside? That’s what belongs on your Joy List.

Why Joy Matters

Joy isn’t a luxury — it’s necessary. It’s what colors our lives, lifts our spirits, and helps us recharge emotionally. When we prioritize joy, we show up more fully in every area of our lives.

And here’s the secret: you don’t need permission to feel joy. You just need to give it to yourself.

Today’s Journal Prompt

  • What are 10 things that instantly bring me joy — no matter what?
  • When was the last time I did one of them just for fun?
  • How can I make space for more joy in my everyday life?

Write them down. And more importantly… do at least one of them today.

Even if it’s just singing in the car. Or taking five minutes to breathe outside. Or dancing like nobody’s watching.

You deserve joy that isn’t tied to productivity. You deserve joy simply because you exist.

Daily Affirmation

“I choose joy, not as a reward, but as a way of living. I create space for what lights me up.”

Let that affirmation live with you today. Say it out loud. Whisper it to your reflection. Write it in your planner.
