2023 Reading Goals & Challenges

I set a few reading goals and challenges for myself this year to encourage more reading. Do you like to read? Do you need motivation to read?

When I started looking for a couple fun challenges to join to help hold me accountable on the reading goal I had set for myself, I was overwhelmed by the sheer number out there. There is definitely a rabbit hole one can go down searching for the right fit. I’m happy to say, I found a few that piqued my interest. I’ll link them below in case you want more information about any of them.

My 2023 reading goals are:

  • Read 120 books this year. This includes physical, digital and audio books.
  • Read 50 books from my Kindle. As I mentioned in this post, I have over 1500 downloaded digital books. Many of those are unread. I would like to read those books instead of buying new ones. In an attempt to not overwhelm myself, I think fifty is a good number for the year.
  • Explore more genres. I love a good romance book. This year I would like to delve into different genres. I’m going to start with mystery and crime dramas since I enjoy watching those types of things on tv.
  • Read at least 10 middle grade books. Since I teach middle school, I would like to be able to recommend more books to my students.
  • Read at least 25 ARCs. I started reading ARCs, advanced reader copies, last year. These books are unreleased and free from authors. Authors are looking for people to read and review their books and I am game for this type of give and take.

My 2023 reading challenges are:

  • Goodreads Challenge – Read 120 books
  • A to Z Challenge – Read one book for each letter of the alphabet
  • Beyond the Bookends Challenge – Follow the prompt each month to pick a book
  • Read Your Bookshelf Challenge – This is a low pressure reading challenge with reading prompts for every month of the year.
  • Let Us Read Middle Grade Challenge – Helping me knock out the 10 middle grade books I plan to read this year.
  • Romanceopoly – A romance reading challenge played like Monopoly.

I would love to hear from you. Do you participate in reading challenges?

  1. I’ve been participating in reading challenges for about a decade! Some years it’s been rewarding, some years it’s been stressful. I just went through a long reading break in 2022 (I was busy writing) and only read 5, so I set my 2023 goal at 56 (my favourite number) to keep the pressure low. I’ve already read 16 books in January without pushing myself, so I could have set it a lot higher.
